Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the Chair of the Democratic National Committee, recently blamed the Tea Party movement for last year’s shooting in Tucson which killed six people and seriously injured Rep. Gabby Giffords. “I hesitate to place blame, but I have noticed it take a very precipitous turn towards edginess and lack of civility with the growth of the Tea Party movement," said Schultz.
Her accusation is not only revolting, but patently untrue. The Tucson shooter was not a Tea Party member, as the Washington Examiner wrote in its coverage of Schultz’s comment: “Giffords' shooter, Jared Lee Loughner, was eventually discovered to be a mentally unstable loner with no immediate partisan agenda and a serious alcohol problem.”
The real “lack of civility”, Rep. Schultz, comes from trying to score cheap political points by exploiting a tragedy that affected a colleague and a friend.
