Tennessee needs jobs to grow the state’s economy, but the Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee is considering a bill (SB 0529) that will increase taxes and put job growth and investment in jeopardy.

This legislation specifically targets the online company Amazon, changing existing law to force them to collect sales taxes.  If SB 0529 passes it could put new distribution centers that Amazon wants to build in Tennessee on hold.  That in turn will put at risk an estimated 2,700 new jobs that these facilities would bring and effectively slaps Tennessee consumers with new internet taxes. 

Not surprisingly, "big-box", mega-stores are behind SB 0529 because they fear the competition that Amazon will bring when they enter the marketplace.  But Tennessee can't afford to allow these narrow, corporate interests to hurt consumers and the state's economy as a whole.
